About us | He kupu mō mātou
Located in the heart of the Waikato, Fonterra’s Waitoa site is a long-established powder plant with cutting edge technology. Waitoa is one of Fonterra’s leading nutritional ingredient manufacturers, processing up to 2.3m litres of milk every day and producing 60,000 tonnes of milk powders annually.
About the opportunity | Mō tēnei tūranga
We’re excited to invite applications for the role of Environmental Manager at our Waitoa site! In this critical position, you’ll lead the environmental operations function, ensuring the health and sustainability of New Zealand’s natural resources. By overseeing the site’s environmental management system, you'll play a key role in our environmental strategy and contribute to the long-term sustainability of our operations.
As the Environmental Manager, you'll lead a dedicated team of four professionals, guiding them in ensuring environmental compliance, advancing the development and implementation of our environmental management system (ISO 14001), and fostering a culture of continuous improvement. This is a leadership role where you’ll be an essential part of the Site Leadership Team, contributing to the overall site strategies and the future direction.
Key Responsibilities:
- Take responsibility for the site’s wastewater treatment and disposal operations, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, monitoring, reporting, and incident response.
- Provide accurate, timely, and transparent compliance reports to regulatory authorities, site management, and other stakeholders.
- Support the renewal of resource consents for the site and contribute to regional and district planning processes.
- Collaborate with both site and regional Environmental Asset Management and Capital Projects teams to ensure best practices in environmental management.

About you | Mōu
We are looking for someone with experience in leading environmental strategies, a passion for environmental management systems, and a track record in managing diverse teams. You will thrive in a dynamic environment and be motivated by the opportunity to shape and advanced our environmental management practices. We value collaboration, and you will be skilled at building positive relationships across different teams and stakeholders.
You may be a great fit for this role if you have:
- Leadership experience, including the ability to engage, inspire, and coach a team.
- A solid understanding of compliance and the Resource Management Act (RMA), including ISO standards.
- Practical experience in environmental risk management and wastewater management.
- Strong communication, relationship-building, and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to influence and work effectively across functions.
- A tertiary qualification in a relevant field (e.g., Science, Environmental Management, Geography) would be an advantage.
